Caleb was born and raised in Ōtaki and has whakapapa to Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga. He is passionate about Māori freshwater stream health indicators and how these can be used to shape and inform freshwater management. The role of tangata whenua and the assertion of Rangatiratanga in decision making processes are primary drivers for Caleb’s work. His work in the field of oral history research with kaumatua has informed his values and understanding of mātauranga Māori. His current research continues in this vein and looks at the development of Māori indicators for lake health.
