Jonathan Abell

PhD student
Jonathan completed his BSc and MA in the U.K. where he also gained experience as an Environmental Scientist specialising in environmental impact assessment. He began his PhD at the University of Waikato in November 2009, under the chief supervision of Professor David Hamilton. Jonathan’s research is related to the restoration of Lake Rotorua, a lake that has been described as a ‘monster’ by lake managers due to the scale of the challenge that it presents them with. The lake’s poor condition is due mainly to the excessive introduction of nutrients which originate from the lake’s catchment. Jonathan’s work will involve collecting water and sediment samples from streams in the catchment and from the lake itself to gain a better understanding of nutrient sources and pathways, with the overall aim of identifying how policy makers and lake stakeholders can best control diffuse pollution.
