Past MSc student
Marie Dennis has spent the past 7 years at Scion in Rotorua working on aspects of wastewater treatment and in 2008 was part of a University of Waikato FORST funded subcontract to develop methodology for a rapid counting method of algal populations in Rotorua Lakes. This involved the use of flow cytometry, a method which is more commonly applied to haematology. Subsequently, Marie is now investigating the possible relationships between viruses, bacteria and environmental factors in freshwater lakes. Extremes of trophic state will be investigated, with potential to understand how trophic status affects the abundance of viruses and their interactions with phytoplankton and bacterial populations.
