Corine de Griujter

Summer student
Corine de Gruijter is evaluating habitat use by Grey mullet in New Zealand coastal waters and within the Waikato River system. Grey mullet specimens were collected from various habitats within the river system (the main channel, tributaries and floodplain lakes) and multiple locations along the West coast of New Zealand. Environmental history and habitat use of fishes between the marine environment as well as within freshwater (main river channel, tributaries and floodplain lakes) of the Waikato will be assessed using otolith microchemistry analysis. Otoliths will be analyzed for a suite of trace elements using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and compared with microchemistry of water collected in selected habitats within the lower river. The results of Corine’s project will allow quantification of migratory life history and the importance of riverine habitats for Grey mullet inhabiting waters of the North Island’s west coast.
