Brennan is researching development of an audio lure for free-ranging koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) under the supervision of Brendan Hicks, Dai Morgan and Adam Daniel. This project involves identifying sound characteristics (e.g., frequency and amplitude) that koi carp respond most positively to as well as establishing which of these sounds perform best (e.g., long attenuation and low degradation rates) in natural water bodies. The final stage will be to determine if free-ranging koi carp can then be trained to associate these auditory cues with food rewards and aggregate at high densities in areas where sounds are broadcasted and food delivered. Findings from this study may be used by wildlife managers to attract koi carp to areas where they can be trapped, netted or poisoned.
