Dr. Trevor Stuthridge

Group Manager - Sustainable Design
Dr Trevor Stuthridge is a Group Manager at Scion, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute. The organisation’s goal is to advance the widespread utilisation of renewable energy, materials and products from plants for economic, environmental and social returns. Key aspects of the organisation’s research include New Forests and Forestry Science, Bioproduct Development and Sustainable Design.
Trevor has a PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of Waikato. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto and a member of technical/management committees for a range of international associations and research partnerships. He is also serves as the Scion representative on the Board of Directors for Beacon Pathways Ltd – an industry/government funded collaborative research consortium focused on making New Zealand homes more socially and environmentally sustainable.
Trevor continues to pursue active research through national and international collaborations related to i) advanced biotechnologies and biorefineries for the production of added value biomaterials, bioplastics and biofuels from industrial wastes and lignocellulosics; ii) environmental technologies for remediation of recalcitrant pollutants and water in primary industries and their recipient ecosystems; and iii) the characterisation, environmental behaviour and ecological impacts of anthropogenic pollutants.
More generally, his role as Group Manager - Sustainable Design has provided great opportunities to extend his interests into the development of sustainability and environmental policy frameworks, landscape design, clean technologies, education and outreach, social research and product design opportunities.
