Dr Tamar Zohary
Kinneret Limnological Laboratory
Dr Tamar Zohary from Israel spent a year of sabbatical leave at the Dept of Biological Sciences of the University of Waikato, with Prof. David Hamilton as her host. Dr Zohary is a research scientist at the Kinneret Limnological Laboratory, Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research, and its director since 2007. She joined IOLR in 1989 after completing a PhD degree in Limnology while working as a research scientist at the CSIR in Pretoria, South Africa. There her research focused on the ecology of bloom-forming cyanobacteria in a hypertrophic lake. Ever since, microbial ecology, and particularly phytoplankton ecology was the major focus of her research. She worked in diverse ecosystems ranging from wetlands to the Mediterranean Sea, but most of her research time was devoted to Lake Kinneret, the biblical Sea of Galilee. Her most recent research focus has been on how Lake Kinneret and its phytoplankton responded to man-induced water level fluctuations. In addition, she is in charge of the routine monitoring of the Kinneret phytoplankton. As the director of the lab she is striving to strengthen the status of the Kinneret Limnological Laboratory as a national and a world-renown center for Limnological studies which specializes in Mediterranean inland waters. Until recently she was also the president of the Israel Association of Aquatic Sciences. While in New Zealand, she is immersed in writing an atlas of the Kinneret phytoplankton, summarizing data and knowledge accumulated over two decades.
