Coastal and Freshwater Resources, Cawthron Institute

Roger’s work has included development of new tools for measuring river ecosystem health using direct measurements of ecosystem processes/functions.  Scientists within the EU, Australia, Canada and the USA are now advocating this approach and seeking advice on how it is being used in New Zealand.  Roger strongly believes in the need for integrated approaches to resource management and enjoys his involvement in interdisciplinary teams working with the community to resolve resource management issues.  Recent examples of this include: 1) a comparison of Maori cultural and scientific methods for river health assessment that was conducted in association with iwi from the Motueka Catchment, and 2) working with dairy farmers to investigate the effects of stock crossings on water quality and encouraging installation of bridges to mitigate contaminant loadings.
