Katrin was involved in using genetic tools to assess cyanobacteria species and numbers in sediment. She extracted cyanobacterial DNA from sediment cores taken from several lakes in the Waikato district and Lake Okaro (Rotorua), and experimented with the germination of cyanobacterial akinetes from these sediment cores. Katrin's research provided us with information regarding the potential for cyanobacterial bloom formation from existing cells present in lake sediments, and contributed toward a thesis for her bachelor's degree in Germany.
Katrin departed to Germany.
